The Anlaby Road/Coltman Street neighbourhood centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community, but the work can help to tackle issues such as -
shop vacancy
anti-social behaviour
traffic
graffiti
and delivering improvements such as -
community events
green space
seating
The Anlaby Road/Coltman Street neighbourhood centre covers the parade of shops on the south side of Anlaby Road between Coltman Street and Bean Street.
Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Anlaby Road/Coltman Street neighbourhood centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area, which are designed to respond to local opportunities and overcome the key challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -
Enhancing sense of arrival – key gateway to and from Hull City Centre.
Inclusion of new/improved crossings to enhance pedestrian environment and slow down traffic.
Introduce designated cycle lanes and sustainable drainage areas to improve air quality environment for pedestrians. This will encourage green travel options such as cycling and walking.
Introduce new street trees, street furniture, cycle parking and parklets where possible.
Potential small scale housing options if opportunities arise on vacant/underutilised land to revitalise the neighbourhood centre and increase footfall.
New wayfinding features that signpost to key destinations nearby, such as West Park, Hull Royal Infirmary and Hull City Centre.
Opportunity for community co-creation of public art and street furniture strategy.
We see these changes as the start of a positive journey for Anlaby Road/Coltman Street neighbourhood centre. Allowing communities to come together and make better use of their local facilities. We will work with public sector partners to improve and make best use of this community high street.
