The Barham Road neighbourhood centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community, but the work can help to tackle issues such as -
shop vacancy
anti-social behaviour
traffic
graffiti
and delivering improvements such as -
community events
green space
seating
The Barham Road neighbourhood centre covers the parade of shops on the north side of Barham Road and on both sides of Winchester Avenue. The Barham pub is also included on the south side of Barham Road.
Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Barham Road neighbourhood centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area, which are designed to respond to local opportunities and overcome the key challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -
Enhancing sense of arrival into the neighbourhood centre.
New/improved crossings along Marfleet Lane. These improve the pedestrian experience and enhance the pedestrian link along Holderness Drain.
Introduce designated cycle lanes and sustainable drainage areas to improve air quality environment for pedestrians. This will encourage green travel options such as cycling and walking.
Introduce new street trees, greenery, street furniture (including bins), and cycle parking along Barham Road.
Transform the pub car parking (facing Barham Road) into a vibrant spill-out environment that could act as new anchor for the neighbourhood, with new greening to promote social interaction.
New wayfinding features that signpost to key destinations nearby, such as Holderness Drain, East Park, the docks and Alderman Kneeshaw Park.
New community space with measures to slow down traffic along Barham Road and promote safe travel.
We see these changes as the start of a positive journey for Barham Road neighbourhood centre. Allowing communities to come together and make better use of their local facilities. We will work with public sector partners to improve and make best use of this community high street.
