The Chanterlands Avenue Local Centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community. The work can help to tackle issues such as -

  • shop vacancy
  • anti-social behaviour
  • traffic
  • graffiti

and delivering improvements such as -

  • community events,
  • green space
  • seating

The Chanterlands Avenue Local Centre covers the parade of shops on both sides of Chanterlands Avenue from Victoria Avenue and the railway bridge running south to Wharncliffe Street.

Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Chanterlands Avenue Local Centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (Opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area, which are designed to respond to local opportunities and overcome the key challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -

  1. enhancing the sense of arrival into Chanterlands Avenue.
  2. inclusion of new and improved crossings to enhance pedestrian environment and implement measures to slow down traffic
  3. introduce designated cycle lanes and where possible, new greening and sustainable drainage areas to improve air quality, environment for pedestrians and pavement user and encourage green travel options such as cycling and walking
  4. introduce new street trees and greenery along Chanterlands Avenue, where possible
  5. implement new street furniture (including bins) and cycle parking
  6. installation of new wayfinding features that signpost key nearby destinations, such as The University of Hull, the cemetery, allotments etc.
  7. potential small scale housing options if opportunities arise

We see these changes as the start of a positive journey for Chanterlands Avenue Local Centre. They allow communities to come together and make better use of their local amenities, and prompting consideration of further improvements and developments in the area. As well as making physical improvements to the centre, we will also work with public sector partners to improve and make best use of this community high street.
