The Grampian Way local centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community, but the work can help to tackle issues such as -

  • shop vacancy
  • anti-social behaviour
  • traffic
  • graffiti

and deliver improvements such as -

  • community events
  • green space
  • seating

The Grampian Way local centre covers the parade of shops on the west and south sides of Grampian Way and includes the Skippers Tavern as well as The Pennine.

Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Grampian Way local centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area, which are designed to respond to local opportunities and overcome the key challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -

  1. New/improved crossings and traffic calming measures along Pennine Way, Grampian Way and Lothian Way. This gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists and slow down traffic.
  2. New designated cycle lanes to improve the cycling/walking environment. This promotes green travel options such as cycling and walking.
  3. Opportunity to establish a new community hub and cycle hire café to activate the shopping centre and engage with adjacent play area.
  4. Opportunity to utilise underused spaces, including community allotments and family area with street furniture.
  5. Opportunity to enhance the existing play area with attractive planting and street furniture.
  6. New wayfinding features that signpost key facilities and green spaces nearby.
  7. Potential to engage the local community to co-create wayfinding, public art and street furniture strategy.
  8. Enhance the shopping centre public realm with new street trees, planters, lighting and street furniture (including bins), improving retail spill-out environment and attracting new local enterprises.
  9. Potential to free up the shopping centre car park (during weekends) as a flexible community square for pop-up events, such as markets, cycle training sessions and other community festivals.
