The Gipsyville local centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community, but the work can help to tackle issues such as -

  • shop vacancy
  • anti-social behaviour
  • traffic
  • graffiti

and deliver improvements such as -

  • community events
  • green space
  • seating

The Gipsyville local centre covers the shops on the south side of Hessle Road from The New Empress pub to Wiltshire Road. The library and businesses to Sunningdale Road are also included on the north side of Hessle Road.

Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Gipsyville local centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area. These respond to local opportunities and challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -

  1. Potential to improve the roundabout and surrounding underused green spaces through the introduction of sustainable drainage and planting enhancement. This will also contribute to improving biodiversity in the area.
  2. Introduce designated cycle lanes and sustainable drainage areas to improve air quality environment for pedestrians. This will encourage green travel options such as cycling and walking.
  3. Introduce greening and street trees along Hessle Road. Cut some street parking spaces to create ‘parklets’, new seating areas and signage.
  4. Signposting that celebrates Gipsyville’s local industrial heritage.
  5. Opportunity to include the community in the co-creation of wayfinding public art and street furniture strategy.
  6. Enhance crossing environments to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists. This includes implementing traffic calming measures along Hessle Road to promote green travel options such as cycling and walking in safety.
  7. Enhance the high street public realm with new street trees, planters, street furniture (including bins) and lighting.
  8. Potential to include artistic murals on closed shutters to animate the streetscene. Particularly during daytime when many existing shops are closed
  9. Potential small scale housing options if opportunities arise on vacant/underutilised land to revitalise the local centre.
