The Holderness Road/Woodford neighbourhood centre is one of the 16 areas to be included in the programme. This brings funding for the community to establish and start to deliver a vision for change in the area to reinvigorate the high street. What this change looks like is up to the local community, but the work can help to tackle issues such as -

  • shop vacancy
  • anti-social behaviour
  • traffic
  • graffiti

and deliver improvements such as -

  • community events
  • green space
  • seating

The Holderness Road/Woodford neighbourhood centre covers the parade of shops on both sides of Holderness Road roughly from Lodge Street to Ferens Haven.

Following consultation between February and March 2025, a plan for the Holderness Road/Woodford neighbourhood centre area has been prepared. A summary of the plan can be found on the phase one consultation (opens in a new window). The plan proposes a wide range of exciting changes for the area, which are designed to respond to local opportunities and overcome the key challenges identified through the consultation. The changes include -

  1. Enhance the sense of arrival into the neighbourhood centre and Woodford Leisure Centre.
  2. New/improved crossings and traffic calming along Holderness Road. This gives pedestrians and cyclists priority.
  3. Review access in front of Woodford Leisure Centre. This could help limit vehicular turning in the area that jeopardise cyclists and pedestrians.
  4. Improve existing cycle lanes with new markings, segregation, greening and sustainable drainage options, where possible.
  5. Introduce new street trees, planters, street furniture (including bins) and cycle parking along Holderness Road.
  6. Signposting to key destinations, such as East Park, the docks and the leisure centre.
  7. Enhance existing green spaces to include sustainable drainage and attractive planting.

You can view the masterplan here (opens in a new window).

We see these changes as the start of a positive journey for Holderness Road/Woodford neighbourhood centre. Allowing communities to come together and make better use of their local facilities. We will work with public sector partners to improve and make best use of this community high street.
