Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council have committed to providing permanent memorials to those involved in the Legacy Funeral Director investigation.
This summer we will build a memorial garden at the Chanterlands Avenue Crematorium in Hull. It will be a peaceful and respectful place, where the ashes that remain in our care will be laid to rest. Anyone affected by the incident will be able to scatter ashes there in the future. The memorial will also be a lasting tribute for all those affected. It will be in an area of the crematorium that we will call the Forget-Me-Not Garden.
The impact of this incident has been felt across the area and so we will also build another memorial garden at the Lelley Fields Crematorium, near Preston, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This will be a further place for reflection, and for people affected by the incident to scatter ashes. This memorial will be known as Butterfly Grove.
The draft designs for both the memorials are available below. Once the designs have been finished, we expect the main building work to be completed by late spring / early summer.
Architects from both Local Authorities have worked closely with the professional teams at Chanterlands Avenue Crematorium and Lelley Fields Crematorium to design the memorials so they fit with the character and appearance of the area and are suitable for scattering ashes. This means that some parts of the design can’t be changed, but we are interested in your views before we produce the final designs. You can view the designs below -
