Have your say on parklet relocation

We are inviting suggestions from the public and local businesses for new locations to relocate 6 of our parklets.

Parklets are small public spaces that repurpose parking bays into places for people to sit, relax, or come-together. Designed as a concept in 2005, the first parklet in the UK was created in 2015 by Hackney Council. Since then, they have been used in a variety of different ways. From outdoor seating, to community gardens, mini event spaces, and even small libraries.

The parklets, currently located along Princes Dock Street in the city centre, will be removed at the end of summer. They were originally adopted by nearby businesses and utilised as additional outdoor seating. However, upcoming improvement works in the area mean that the parklets will no longer be needed.

In order to help identify where to relocate the parklets, we are seeking location ideas, as well as feedback on how they may be best used. Ideally, we are looking for permanent locations, but temporary or trial sites are also welcome.

All suggestions will be reviewed for suitability. Each feasible site accessed by a multi-disciplinary working group.

The parklets measure 8m x 2m and have a platform height of approximately 250mm from the ground. Compliance with the Equality Act is a mandatory part of feasibility checks.

Some locations may also need extra permissions, such as pavement café licenses. These will be assessed during any formalisation period.

The parklets situated outside of Trinity Market on North Church Side will remain in their current location and are not part of this relocation project.

If a suggested location isn’t suitable for a parklet, but there’s strong public interest, we may suggest an alternative project.

Liaise with your local councillors to support your proposals if you believe the site would provide a positive impact on the community.

This research tool is not an application for a parklet and is purely to gain wider opinion and suggestions or potential sites. Any sites proposed or identified outside of this survey will also be considered during the same process.

The interactive map tool attached to this survey will allow you to drop pins anywhere within the city boundary to mark locations you feel would benefit from a parklet.

Use the green pin if you are a member of the public that would like to propose a location and provide any reasoning behind this.

Use the orange pin if you represent a business or community group that would be interested in utilising the parklets. Add comments to how you propose to use the parklet and what benefits you feel it would bring. Do not provide contact details which you do not wish to be visible to the public.

Use the text box to explain why you think this would be a good location for a parklet, and what benefit it would provide. You can suggest more than one location, using the pins, if you have multiple ideas.

Do not provide any personal information or contact details on the survey itself as it is viewable to everyone accessing the tool.

If you have any specific feedback beyond what is placed on the map, or you are a business or community group that would like to express an interest and provide additional information or contact details, email Parklets@hullcc.gov.uk. Alternatively you can call us on 01482 300 300 and ask for your contact details to be forwarded to Paul Hutchinson in the bridges, monuments and structures team.
